Subjects

Each day exciting challenges and new areas of learning are presented to our eager pupils.

The acquisition of skills and knowledge is planned carefully to excite and stimulate our young minds. We believe that literacy and numeracy are essential areas of learning that require daily attention. Morning teaching time is used in the pursuit of reading, writing and mathematics. These skills are the core of our curriculum and are essential for all assessment procedures during Year 2.

An exciting and vibrant curriculum is delivered in the early years by our dedicated team of practitioners. The six areas of learning are interconnected and develop busy, motivated and happy learners, who will progress smoothly into Key Stage 1.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) areas of learning

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Our excellent facilities enable children to develop socially and emotionally to grow, learn and have fun.

Communication, Language and Literacy

We encourage the development of communication skills through a wide range of teaching methods, resources and experiences providing children with excellent foundations

Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy

Practical activities introduce children to the exciting world of number, shape, space and measures. They begin to develop mathematical knowledge for life long learning

Knowledge and Understanding of the World

Children are taught through topics to help them appreciate the world around them and experience visits from the fireman, vet, nurse, musician and chef to name a few. They enjoy role play activities and the vast range of resources that support this area of learning.

Physical Development

The children learn about the importance of keeping safe, being healthy and are supported to develop both gross and fine motor skills. They take part in lessons taken by our games specialist, they also use the main school hall for music and movement and apparatus work.

Creative Development

The children are encouraged to develop their creativity and imagination through a variety of materials and activities each day.

Literacy

Our pupils develop skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing, enabling them to express themselves imaginatively and creatively and to communicate effectively with others. Our aim is that pupils will become enthusiastic readers of stories, poetry and drama as well as non fiction texts. In studying literacy pupils will begin to understand how language works by looking at its patterns, structures and origins and gain confidence to create their own free writing through news, diaries, poetry, and creative writing.

All children are introduced to a cursive style of handwriting and encouraged to take pride in the presentation and accuracy of their work.

Numeracy

We acknowledge that numeracy enables us to make sense of the world around us through developing a child’s ability to calculate, to reason and to solve problems. It helps children understand and appreciate relationships and patterns in both number and space. Our carefully planned mathematical experiences challenge and develop knowledge, skills and application of number systems.

Science

Science is taught throughout the school. In early years it is part of knowledge and understanding of the world. In Year 1 it becomes an area of study as a separate subject.

Science promotes an understanding of natural phenomena. It aims to stimulate a child’s curiosity in finding out why things happen in the way they do. We provide methods of enquiry and investigation for pupils to appreciate the importance of science in their present lives and in the future on a personal, national and global level.

French

Through an activity based French curriculum, we aim to provide a positive introduction to another language and encourage confidence and enjoyment of listening and speaking French. French is taught throughout the school from kindergarten.

Religious Education

At Weston Green School Religious Education is a curriculum subject which focuses on beliefs and practices of the major world religions of Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Sikhism and Hinduism. It enables our pupils to explore the meaning of life, human nature and destiny; about right and wrong, traditions and worship and festivals and celebrations. Religious Education contributes to the rich, broad and balanced curriculum at our school.

School and class assemblies underpin our strong Christian ethos and also focus on the rich and varied celebrations in our diverse culture.

History

We focus on History as a subject area from Year 1 although foundation stage pupils visit various areas of this as part of knowledge and understanding of the world. Our Year 1 and 2 time travelers thoroughly enjoy the time spent discovering about the past and how this impacts on the world today. History is taught through an excellent range of resources and brought to life by visitors from the past!

Geography

Foundation stage pupils experience aspects of geography as part of knowledge and understanding of the world. Pupils in Year 1 are introduced to geography as a subject and are taught about the exciting world they live in. They visit land masses, jungles, deserts and oceans and begin to learn about the importance of working together to look after our wonderful planet.
