On Monday 23rd January, the Kindergarten children celebrated Chinese New Year. Parents were invited into School to watch. We told the story of how the Chinese named their years and showed how to do the ribbon dance. The children had made red envelopes for their Mummies which some gave with a little reluctance when they realised they contained chocolate coins! This was quickly remedied when the teachers told the children there was an envelope for them in their classrooms.

The pupils in Mrs. Sheridan’s Year 2 class also celebrated the occasion by doing traditional Chinese origami and making colourful lanterns. Olivia, Alice and Mia delighted the class by wearing their beautiful Chinese gowns. Freddie greeted Mrs. Harvey with a Chinese welcome and gave traditional Chinese gifts to the class. The photograph shows Alice proudly displaying her new Chinese dragon “Jingles”!

As part of our focus on maths, pupils from Reception to Year 4 recently took part in a session of problem solving activities tailored to their year group. These sessions were run by The Happy Puzzle Company, with teachers and assistants joining in and guiding where appropriate, but leaving the children to come up with a solution to each puzzle.

The sessions took place in the hall and children worked in small groups to solve a range of different puzzles. All were designed to encourage co-operation and could be successfully solved using teamwork. Some groups found this easier to achieve than others, but as the session progressed, all groups discovered that collaboration was the best way of working, and a huge sense of achievement was felt when a particularly tough puzzle was completed.

The day was a great success, with plenty of fun and enjoyment of the various puzzles, as well as a lot of mathematical concepts being explored and mathematical language used, often without the children realising.

The Library and Resource Room was a new edition to the school back in September and the money raised from the cake sales has gone towards a set of reading list books for Years 3 and 4. The next set of money will go towards Year 1 and 2.

Upon arrival, they were met by Samuel Pepy’s maid who helped them act out the story of the Great Fire of London. All the pupils participated, with some dressing up in costumes. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the visit and there was much discussion about what they had learnt on the journey back to school.

Year 2 pupil Cameron Marshall enjoyed the trip so much that he created a fantastic drawing of the Great Fire of London shown here.

Year 3 recently enjoyed a fun and busy day out at Wisley where they were able to enjoy a number of outdoor activities.

Linked to their Science topic, ‘Helping Plants Grow’ pupils had the opportunity to become a gardener for the day. Many of them learnt how to sow seeds, prick out seedlings, take leaf cuttings and plant plants.

Despite the grey and damp weather, the pupils had an enjoyable day and many of them have even decided to take up gardening as a hobby! The volunteers who work at Wisley commented on how well-mannered and behaved all of the pupils were.

KS1 and KS2 pupils held their Harvest Service at All Saints Church on Thursday 20th October.

All pupils sang with great enthusiasm and the choir contributed a beautiful harvest hymn.

Year 1 had recited a poem about pumpkins which they recited wearing pumpkin masks they had made in class.

Year 2 used an acrostic harvest poem and lots of props to help us reflect on the meaning of harvest.

Year 3 and Year 4 gave us plenty of food for thought with their excellent presentations about the work of Water Aid and the Fairtrade Foundation.

We all realised how lucky we are and parents gave very generously to our retiring collection. Thanks to them, we have been able to send a cheque for £174.60 to Water Aid to further their work providing clean, safe drinking water to the world’s poorest people.

We were also able to deliver several boxes of harvest gifts to Princess Alice Hospice in Esher. Thank you to all families who contributed.

Kindergarten and Reception children welcomed parents to their harvest celebration before half-term. The children placed their harvest gifts in a large basket before Kindergarten recited their wonderful spider poem using spiders and flies made in class.

Reception told the story of The Enormous Turnip, with actions and some enthusiastic individual performances!

The children all sang beautifully as well.

Thank you to all families who contributed harvest gifts.
