On Saturday May 12th W.G.S. took part in a football tournament at Shrewsbury House. Our first match was W.G.S. v Merlin, it was a good match. Then in the next match Joshua scored a goal which was in the top corner. Then we watched the B team. They played Squirrels. Then it was our final match which was 1 – 0 to us and I scored that goal and I was very happy! Then we got a goody bag and a donut. I enjoyed it.
Clement, Year 2

On Saturday 12th May Year 2 boys went to play a tournament at Shrewsbury House School. I played for Weston Green B. I was number 12. Mohamed-Ali was goalkeeper. Our first match was really tricky. We could not score but we were really playing well. In the end the score was 2-0 to Merlin. Our next match was better. Jack scored for our team. The score was 1-0 to us. The next match we drew. The match was against Squirrels. Jack scored again! The score was 1-1. The last match was against Shrewsbury Lodge. It was the best match. I nearly scored! Jack scored so the score was 1-0 to us. I really enjoyed it.
Cameron, Year 2

On Saturday 14th May, all the boys from Year 2 were invited to participate in the Shrewsbury House School Football Tournament.

The morning started well with some welcome sunshine. The boys took up the challenge, playing well and quickly settling into their stride. They attacked and defended well and there were some wonderful saves from both Henry and Mohamed-Ali, our very brave goalkeepers.

There were some spectacular goals, in particular Jack with a very impressive left foot and Joshua from the half way line.

The games were all very evenly matched and both Weston Green teams won some of their games.

At the end of the tournament, Shrewsbury House presented a t-shirt to a boy from each team who showed the true spirit of the game. The recipients of this award for Weston Green were Freddie and Jack . Well done boys.

A big thank you to Alan Dowson for coaching the boys, Mohamed-Ali Oweiss from Year 1 for stepping in as goalkeeper and to all the parents who supported the boys on the day.

Read some football reports by Year 2 pupils here and watch their post match interviews below:

On Wednesday 2nd May, Year 2 visited Gunnersbury House Museum to learn more about the life of Florence Nightingale, who they have been studying in their History topic, ‘Famous People and Events’.

On arrival, the pupils were met by ‘Miss Nightingale’ and shown a carriage that Florence Nightingale might have used on her journey to the Crimea.

The pupils were taken to the Education Room, where they all enjoyed participating in a re-enactment of Florence Nightingale’s story, using costumes and props of the period.

The children were completely engaged in the activity and thoroughly enjoyed the whole day, including their picnic lunch!

It was an extremely valuable experience for the children and it has built on their learning as demonstrated in their oral and written recall back in class.

Recently, the Year 1 classes visited The Lookout Discovery Centre and spent the morning investigating the Learning Zones.

They had fun making circuits, taking pictures of their shadows, listening to their voices through a long distance telephone and playing with the water.

After lunch they climbed the 88 steps up The Lookout tower. It was cloudy so they could not see very far. They then went into the classroom to learn about food chains in the forest.

Next, they were given nets and magnifying jars to collect bugs and the pupils enjoyed learning how to shake the tree to collect the bugs. They caught all sorts of interesting things!

It was a very interesting place to visit and the pupils all had a great day.

Have a look at some of their discoveries below:

On Monday 14th May, Year 3 visited Hampton Court Palace to support their studies about The Tudors.

The pupils were met by a costumed presenter dressed as Anne Boleyn’s sister. She led a session called ‘Investigating Henry VIII’, where the pupils worked in groups, looking at written evidence, pictorial sources and replica artefacts, to try to understand more about the personality of Henry VIII.

The pupils were hugely inspired and were eager to find out more through a number of thought provoking and pertinent questions. They gained a greater understanding of analysis and interpretation of historical data and evidence linked to the Tudor palace.

The pupils were also invited to look around the palace and were able to learn lots about Tudor food and Tudor kitchens. The Royal Chapel was also a favourite, not forgetting the unmissable famous Tudor portraits and meeting Henry VIII in costume!

The day was most enjoyable and the pupils learnt many facts about the palace and Henry VIII. The children were very well mannered and polite and impressed a very noble visitor by bowing and dropping to their knees to show reverence for His Majesty.

There will be a surprise visit by royalty to Weston Green School… watch this space for even more excitement in our next Bulletin!

Weston Green parents were treated to a series of lively and toe-tapping performances at the end of last term, when the pupils from Reception upwards performed their Spring Concerts, showcasing the songs which they had enjoyed preparing during the term.

The musical programme was varied, from the simple action songs performed with great enthusiasm by Reception, through to an inspiring Teddy Bear Rock ‘n’ Roll from Year 1 and the recorder ensembles and two-part harmonies performed by KS2 pupils.

The rousing finale of The Magic Travel Machine demonstrated the power of singing in a group and put broad smiles on the faces of both performers and the audience.

All the pupils greatly enjoy performing for their parents and it is a strength of the school, which is built on year by year, that all pupils are encouraged to develop the confidence to speak and sing out while gaining so much from the experience of performing.

Please watch fantastic performances from the dress rehearsals below:

Music is an important part of the teaching at Weston Green. Pupils can learn the violin from Year 1, the piano from Year 2 and the guitar from Year 3. Individual singing lessons will be introduced from September for KS2 pupils.

The peripatetic music teachers have been working together with pupils to prepare them for their music exams and have been rewarded with considerable success:

Jessica Lee in Year 3 gained her certificate last term when she took her prep test. This initial test before Grade 1, is not graded, but gives pupils the chance to perform simple pieces to an examiner, giving them an opportunity to gain experience of the exam process.

Xannie Ginn in Year 4 gained a distinction in her Grade 1 piano exam in December. She has already taken her Grade 2 in March, in which she gained a merit. It is a considerable achievement to take two graded exams so close together. Well done Xannie!

Maia Bennett in Year 4 is learning both the piano and the guitar. She gained a merit in her Grade 1 piano in December and has recently obtained a distinction in her Grade 1 guitar exam. This is a wonderful achievement. Congratulations Maia!

Weston Green are very proud of all their instrumental musicians. They will perform in a concert for their parents later in the term, which will be a wonderful opportunity to display the progress which they have all made this year.
