A new year and new challenges

Posted on: 12 Jan 2016 by Weston Green School

Welcome back to another term! We have some new faces amongst us and I hope they already feel very much ‘at home’ with us.

The New Year always brings with it fresh aspiration, hope and challenge. For the Y6 pupils, this is the time they have been working towards for a good while now: it is the month for entrance exams to the various schools to which they have applied. They have (been) prepared exceptionally well, they have worked very hard consistently well over the last 6 months or so and we wish them well as they go to each exam and, of course, success. We await news.

Whilst exams form an inevitable part of the educational process, we encourage ‘learning with joyful enthusiasm’ which we love to see in practice on a daily basis. To offer the children opportunities to thrive independently, we are again looking for them to do an extended project after the wonderful successes of the VE Day projects last year.

This year, there is a wealth of choice as 2016 sees not only the 90th birthday of the longest reigning monarch in British history, but also the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death and the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings in 1066.  Therefore, this week, we have launched ‘PROJECT 2016’ whereby the children can choose any topic related to any one of these themes. A letter with further details was attached to yesterday’s email shot. The children excelled in so many learning areas last year and demonstrated learning characteristics we value highly. May they go even higher this year!
