High expectation and high achievement

Posted on: 08 Mar 2016 by Weston Green School

“A person with low standards will forever be walking. A person with high standard will soon stop walking and start running. Later, they’ll soon stop running and start galloping. The next time you see him, he’s either flying or soaring.” - Israelmore Ayivor, Leaders' Ladder

Charles Franklin Kettering was an American inventor, engineer, businessman, and the holder of a staggering 186 patents. He was a founder of Delco, and was head of research at General Motors from 1920 to 1947. He clearly achieved much. He was a believer in setting the bar high and said:

“High achievement always takes place in the framework of high expectation.”

Whilst I cannot at all emulate his amazing creativity, I can relate to and agree whole-heartedly with the importance of having high expectations. Too many would shy away from that and take the easy route, thinking the lower the bar, the less the disappointment. However, I see children excelling often because the level of expectation is high. High and attainable.

This term we have our first art scholar; on the hockey pitch we have defeated schools which are significantly bigger than ours, we have reached national finals in both hockey and football, we have won a national IT competition, we have become a Forest School.

We believe in being our very best selves, in setting high targets and striving to meet them...high achievement within (and because of) a framework of high expectation.
