Know thyself

Posted on: 26 Feb 2015 by Weston Green School

The Ancient Greek aphorism "know thyself" is one of the Delphic maxims and was inscribed in the forecourt of the Temple of Apollo at Delphi, according to the Greek writer Pausanias.

The maxim "know thyself" has had a variety of meanings attributed to it in literature and could apply equally to those whose boasts exceed what they deliver, as well as a warning to pay little or no attention to the opinion of the multitude. It is certainly an encouragement to reflect upon who we are and what we have accomplished. Without becoming too introspective, surely ‘knowing ourselves’ allows us set meaningful targets and to reach for that which is attainable, but is presently just out of reach.

As we journey on educationally, the next step for us as a learning community may well be to ask the children, even at this relatively tender age, to reflect more upon their own accomplishments. So, as the summer term moves into view, we shall be asking the children to assess their own effort grades and, as the new Year 6 pupils take up the mantle of playing a leading role in the school and preparing themselves for senior school in September, we shall be offering the opportunity for them to accompany their parents to Parents Evening - by this, may they get to know themselves better and accomplish all they should.
