‘Now’ and ‘then’... education for life

'Now’ and ‘then’ … education for life

We are in the business of education for life. This means we are concerned not only about ensuring all is well in the present but also in the future, as much as is possible; it is always a complete delight to meet old WGS pupils (and I have now had the privilege of meeting a few in their 20s) who reflect on their time at the school and acknowledge how well they were cared for then and what an impact this has had on their life since. In a world which is fast-changing, how do we continue to deliver that forward-thinking experience - meeting the needs of the children now and with an eye on what is to come? Two recent initiatives might seek to illustrate this: the Gifted, Able and Talented Group and the new building.

The Gifted, Able and Talented Group works across age-bands, giving pupils the chance to work alongside others who have that wonderful ability to think ‘outside the box’ and who revel in the opportunity to give free rein to their inventive creativity. This week, this group was on a trip together to develop those thinking skills and to enhance further their collaborative skills which they practise weekly under the guidance of Miss Watson.

The new building is, as I have often said, just a building; however, it affords more opportunity, more space to ‘be’ and to ‘do’. We have deliberately aimed to keep one room as an ‘open’ area, providing the space for this to evolve into an experimental area – for science, for IT, for design – to meet the children’s needs.

How wonderful it will be not only to see these initiatives giving full vent to the children’s learning dynamic now but to know that, in 10, 20, 30 years, they will look back and acknowledge the importance of their time at WGS in setting them up for the future.
