Poetry in Motion

It might perhaps seem incongruous in this technological age that we should give the challenge and opportunity to our children to learn a poem; this is surely something from a time gone by, something ‘old fashioned’, even irrelevant. But no, quite the reverse. These last few weeks have seen children as young as four stretching and challenging their minds by memorising lines and, far from this being a chore, this has been fun, enchanting, mesmerising as they have found a joy in words, an increased self-confidence in performance and a sense of community in sharing in what the whole school family is doing together. Beyond that, they have spent time understanding the humour, nuance and perhaps humanity of the words and sought to ‘deliver’ their poem with meaning. For us who are privileged to hear them, this has been a wonderful few weeks, hearing snippets of rhyme and lines of impromptu verse. There has been a momentum about the competition and, with the final this week, it looks to only build to a glorious event on Thursday. This really is poetry in motion …
