Value added

Posted on: 15 Jun 2016 by Weston Green School

Research by the Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring (CEM) at Durham University has found that attending an Independent School in England gives pupils benefits equivalent to two additional years in education. Whilst this is ground-breaking research, the conclusions of the research are no surprise to those of us who have been in independent education for some time: we know how purposeful the environment, how strong the ethos, how diverse the pupils’ daily educational diet and how focused and energy-filled each day, week and term; that rich combination was always going to deliver results which proved the high ‘value-added’.

WGS parents are well aware of how tired the children can become as we head into a break: this is the natural result of so much effort and energy poured into each day .. and we would not have it any other way. The week before half-term saw the top two years away at PGL in Devon and the performances of ‘Animal Rumble Grumble’ by the younger children – both utterly diverse, both equally wonderful.  This came on the back of the a week of exams where the children did very well and a week which saw Weston Green win is first national football silverware – the Plate, at the national finals in Nottingham. This is but a snapshot of the children’s experience – and one which epitomises the richness of diet which has at its heart that academic focus and which offers so much more besides. As you read thisnewsletter, may you taste again that richness.
