A Christmas puzzle for year 6

Posted on: 14 Dec 2015 by Weston Green School

It may be Christmas but maths goes on in year 6. Mrs Hawkins set them the very tough challenge of writing a formula for how many presents she would receive on the 30th, then 50th and even 100th day of Christmas (if it could possible go on that long!), based on the "Twelves Days of Christmas" song. Like winterland woodpeckers they kept going until two teams came up with two different - but equally successful formulae!  Adam, Sophia and Tom were declared the overall winners with a very tidy formula of:

(n +1) x n

      2

Joe, Faren and Rorke also did a brilliant job, being the first to finish with an equally successful, if slightly wordier solution. On day 30 Mrs Hawkins would have 465 present!  What brilliant mathematicians!
