Kindergarten & Reception Explore Life Under the Sea

This term, the pupils in Kindergarten and Reception have been exploring life under the sea.

Kindergarten have been learning about many different creatures that live in and out of the sea and have also been reading The Rainbow Fish and discussing the importance of sharing and being kind to others.

The children have enjoyed creating a beach environment and rock pool outdoors. Following their play, they were keen to find out more and have been using books and computers for their research.

The Reception classes have been focusing on oceans and seas and have been particularly interested in learning about marine life and the different types of fish and animals that live in the sea. They have enjoyed exploring the differences between land and sea creatures and have enjoyed devising their own charts to record the creatures they could find in the playground:

The featured role play areas are a Beach Cafe and an Aquarium which have given pupils the opportunity to explore coin recognition, a topic focus in mathematics. In addition, children have been discussing 3D shapes and are thrilled to work in the outdoor role play ice-cream parlour, working with cones and spheres to construct ice-cream specialities, and selling their creations to their friends.

During literacy sessions, children have designed their own rock pools, sketching and labelling the various creatures that might be found there. They followed the exercise up with a provision to construct an outdoor rock pool using shells, water and sand.

Children have been engaged in a number of creative activities inspired by the seaside. In RM, pupils have been enjoying still life sketching of shells, while RG worked collectively on a class mural using black pencils to sketch and shade.
