Outstanding Results from Year 4 English Speaking Board Examination

Year 4 pupils are celebrating their success in their recent English Speaking Board Examination. The English Speaking Board (ESB) is a National Awarding Body which provides accredited qualifications in a variety of Spoken English assessment programmes. The assessment for our Year 4 pupils, which was conducted here at Weston Green School by a visiting ESB examiner, consisted of four solo mandatory sections for each child:

Pupils were assessed and awarded a level of attainment for each of the four sections with an overall examination result which is the aggregate for the sections. We are delighted to report that from the class of twelve pupils, ten achieved Distinction (90 %+) and two were awarded Merit Plus (80 %+) We congratulate these pupils on achieving such outstanding results in this important examination. Their thorough preparation in school and at home, helped develop their oral and presentation skills, as well as an appreciation of literature and language.

Many of the pupils found the prospect of standing alone in front of an audience to present an interesting talk, recite a poem from memory and read aloud from a book with expression and good eye contact with their audience, a somewhat daunting prospect. However, with growing self-esteem, lots of practice and sterling effort, they all improved their performances in the weeks leading up to the examination. We are immensely proud of them and congratulate them on achieving outstanding results.

Our aim at Weston Green School is to promote effective, confident and constructive oral communication skills for all ages. Part of the emphasis in our Literacy teaching is on spoken English as a practical and enjoyable life skill. We encourage our pupils to develop good speaking skills and also become active listeners, sharing knowledge and ideas with others.

Pupils will be presented with their Certificates at Assembly before the end of this term.
