Pupils enjoy a week of literary celebrations for World Book Day

Posted on: 12 Mar 2015 by Weston Green School | Category: Early Years, General News, Key Stage 1, Key Stage 2

Pupils at Weston Green took part in a wide range of literary activities last week, to celebrate World Book Day.

Children across the school, aged three to eleven years, enjoyed a broad programme of activities including a creative writing session with children’s author Nick Handel. Older pupils also spent time working with younger pupils, sharing their skills in cross-year group writing workshops.

The week culminated in a day of fancy dress, with children and school staff dressed as characters from their favourite books.

Jessica Lee, aged 11, said: "I really enjoyed helping the Key Stage 1 children as it gave me a chance to pass on the skills I had learnt, to help with story writing. It was such a privilege to have the opportunity to do it."

Camilla Earp, English Coordinator, said: “Combining a celebration of reading and writing to mark World Book Day, was too good an opportunity to miss. We were very keen to celebrate our love of books and reading and to link this with various creative writing activities, to reflect how important reading is to developing children’s writing.”

“Both the workshop led by Nick Handel and the cross-year group workshops meant that there were many avenues for the children to explore and engage with, and their final pieces of work demonstrated not only how far they had improved but reflected their enjoyment of the whole experience.”
