Summer Sport is here!

As the winter finally makes way for the summer, Weston Green's sporting focus turns to cricket and athletics.

Whilst many of the children are playing cricket for the first time, they will still experience match play in both Games sessions and with fixtures. Cricket can be a brutal game (imagine getting out first ball - just ask either Mr Harrison, Mr Morgan or Mr Knight for their personal experiences, if in doubt!) but we aim to take away that fear of failure by playing a version of the game where every player gets a fair game. We have always offered cricket as a mixed sport, to match the school's ethos. Girls/Women’s cricket is the biggest growing sport in the UK so we are hoping that many of the girls at Weston Greeen will view cricket as "their" summer sport for many years to come. Weston Green is surrounded by active cricket clubs running strong cricket coaching programmes, which are open to boys and girls.

One of the exciting features of the summer, is the athletics medal which runs throughout the term. Each pupil in Key Stage 2 competes in eight different events which are measured or timed. After each event, the best third of scores receives 30 points, middle third 20 points and final third 10 points. After the eight events the points are added up to see who has achieved gold, silver and bronze. Each and every year we see pupils' competitive spirit on display. Whilst achieving gold is fantastic, we always highlight that giving your best is the ultimate goal. The beauty of athletics is that the three different disciplines (running, throwing and jumping) can suit different body types.

You will see a new sports teacher on show this term - Mr Knight. A fine sportsman himself, he has already made a positive impression on the children and is very excited about helping to ignite their love of sport.

Any matches or sports events are made special by spectators cheering on all competitors or players, so we very much look forward to seeing parents during the summer. We have also booked the sunshine for Sports Day, this year!
