The house system

The house system gives each child the opportunity to take part in a range of different activities and competitions during the course of the school year effectively within a large team. Staff are also allocated to a house and can be seen, for example on Sports Day, enthusiastically cheering on members of their house!

Each house is led by a House Captain - this is Year 6 pupil who applied for the role by writing a letter explaining why they feel they should be considered for the role, what they feel they will bring to it and what they will do for their house.

House meetings take place several times a term, with the staff and pupils of each house meeting to discuss a range of issues, to plan for any competitions which might be coming up and to talk about promoting their house.

The system enables younger and older pupils to work together, with the older ones regularly providing support or advice and helping those younger than themselves. This nurturing role is one which the older children take seriously and when playtimes for different sections of the school overlap, the children will often mix freely with older or younger pupils they know. Some activities, such as the tower challenge during Maths Week, enable small groups of children to work together in mixed ages towards a common goal, sharing ideas and testing theories, as well as strengthening the bonds between members of each house.
