Travel plan - more details

Posted on: 06 May 2016 by Weston Green School | Category: General News, Key Stage 1, Key Stage 2, Kindergarten

The travel plan is a structured strategy with objectives and targets detailing how the school manages and promotes sustainable travel to school. The initiatives were formalised as a result of the planning permission granted in January but will be adopted going forward.

The objective is to reduce the number of car journeys to WGS.

What the school and staff are doing to achieve this:

Staff travel: Staff have adopted a number of strategies this term which include: walking / cycling, parking further away and walking the extra 5/10 minutes to school, using the car parking spaces at the rear of the school, car sharing, using the train.

Further measures: The school has requested Bikeability and pedals training provided by Elmbridge Council. We have been able to secure the use of Old Cranleighans sports facility from September 2016; this will allow us to walk the children to sports and their sports bags and equipment will be taken to the sports ground on the minibus. This will reduce coach travel. We have also approached the council with regard a coach pull-in on the current school markings.

The school will also be extending the time period in which you can drop your child to school from 08.10 a.m. to 08.40 a.m.

The school is looking to establish a Minibus Shuttle Service and a Minibus Route: A free shuttle service will operate from Old Cranleighans Rugby Club and children from KS1&2 can be dropped by parents and then travel together to school on the minibus. We are also looking to do a ‘bus run’ – details from the office.

How can you help?

Could you adopt the practices which the staff are using? Could you walk/cycle/scooter to school some of the time? Could you ‘Park and Stride’?  The school has 3 locations all within an approximate 5/7 minute walk of the school where parents can park and then walk children to school; Weston Green Sports Club on Longmead Road, All Saints Weston Church and outside Old Cranleighans Rugby Club on Portsmouth Road (access to the school would be via Newlands Avenue).  Is there someone who lives close to you, could you car share some of the time?  Please contact the office and we can help find a car share buddy.  Can you make use of the minibus shuttle / minibus run?

When will all this happen? Some of these initiatives, such as car sharing and walking/cycling/scooter to school can be implemented now and some we are aiming to introduce after half term, others in September.   Please look out for further details in the upcoming Thursday emails; in the meantime if you are interested in the minibus shuttle service or the potential route in September please do not hesitate to email swithers@westongreenschool.org.uk .
