Year 1 Learn About Growing Plants at RHS Garden Wisley

Posted on: 22 May 2014 by Weston Green School | Category: Year 1

This half term, Year 1 has been learning about ‘How Plants Grow’, which gave us an exciting opportunity to go and visit RHS Garden Wisley. We eagerly put on our wellies and coats and headed off for a day of exploring and investigating.

During the morning, we had the chance to look around The Glasshouse and found lots of interesting plants. The ‘Bird of Paradise’ and the ‘Red Hot Cats Tail’ plants were firm favourites for Year 1. We were lucky enough to have Wisley Bear guiding us to help us spot lots of exotic plants which was a big help and he gave us some extra information about some of the plants too.

In the afternoon we enjoyed listening to a story before heading off into the wild garden to find as many different coloured plants as we could. While we were searching, we were told about a giant that lives at Wisley and decided to go and see him. We were met by the Giant Red Wood Tree and couldn’t believe how tall and big the tree was, especially when we saw the size of the seed!

To finish off a fantastic day of exploring we had the chance to each plant our own sunflower. We took great care of the seeds and planted them into our own plant pot so we can see who’s can grow the tallest!

Year 1 thoroughly enjoyed their day out and, even though the weather wasn’t as kind to us as we would have liked, we all returned with big smiles.
