A wonderful start to Forest School for our Kindergarten children

Posted on: 07 Mar 2016 by Weston Green School | Category: Forest School, Early Years, Kindergarten

This half term 16 children from Kindergarten have started Forest School sessions with Miss Carter, Mrs James, Ms Reynolds and our parent helper Mrs McKay and we had our first on 3rd March.

Our session began with our weekly risk assessment and an introduction of the rules of Forest School. When we arrived at base camp we met ‘Sammy the Squirrel’ who set us the task of marking out the boundary area. We went off in two groups and helped each other tie the tape to the trees and make our magic bubble.

Next we played a game of 1,2,3, where are you? This helps children become familiar with the woodland terrain and environment and to recognise our recall signal.

Once all the children had become familiar with our woodland base camp, we guided them to use the stimulus of the setting to pursue their interests and become independent learners. We made wooden disc necklaces and made Journey Sticks using the story ‘Not a Stick’ by Antoinette Ports as inspiration.

"Look I made us a sausage roll"                 "Look a Hedgehog, careful of its spikes"

At the end of our Forest School sessions we reflect on our experiences over a hot chocolate and snack. This week the children got to hold Sammy the Squirrel and tell him how their first session went.

We all had an excellent time and cannot wait till our next Forest School session.
