Keep calm the school year is nearly over!

Posted on: 14 Jul 2015 by Weston Green School | Category: Key Stage 2, Year 4

Cups, shields, certificates, badges and stickers have all been handed out. Successes through the year have been acknowledged to rapturous applause

Desks have been emptied, library books returned, rubbish bins are overflowing and outside our tomato plants are bearing fruit. Props have been built, scenery painted; rehearsal and more rehearsals; the show is finally underway.

Friends and family talk to us about ‘winding down’ towards the end of the school year, but for staff and pupils in schools it does not feel anything like ‘winding down’ at this time of year; it feels more like acceleration!

In these final weeks, teachers are still kept on their toes and children’s hands and feet are still kept busy. In the midst of all the excitement this week, Year 4 have been taking time to reflect on a year that has sped by. They can recall their first morning as Year 4 pupils when some of them confess to having felt ‘really nervous’ about life with their new teacher. Most remember with great fondness the everyday routines of attending breakfast club, playing with their friends in the playground, cakes on Fridays, doing their favourite subjects (yes, that does include maths and English), and of course games lessons. The also recall the excitement in the air the day the diggers arrived to start laying the new astro-turf, and the shock which we all felt the morning the giant holm oak tree came crashing down just after we had all arrived a school.

Special moments stand out of course and hopefully these will remain with them for a long time to come. They include leading the school assembly on Remembrance Day; visiting the Rose Theatre to see a production of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe; the Carol Service; VE Day projects; a visit from The Young Shakespeare Company who put on an amazing production of Hamlet; Roald Dahl Museum visit; Swimming Gala; Sports Day and of course all the excitement surrounding our end of year show, Joseph.

Year 4’s determined efforts in in so many aspects of school life mean they are ready for the next step on their journey. With every year they have become that little bit more independent. They have many happy memories to take away as they go off for their well-earned rest. It won’t seem long until parents will be dusting down the uniforms and the games kits, or buying new ones because the children have grown lots in the holidays Teachers will be lining up the exercise books, the reading diaries and the spelling lists, and getting out the glue sticks once more. Happy holiday!
