The power of the written word

Posted on: 09 Mar 2015 by Weston Green School | Category: Key Stage 1, Key Stage 2

The second half of the spring term began with a huge push on creative writing. Although ‘World Book Day’ was just around the corner, at Weston Green we decided to go one step further by complementing the pleasure of reading with an extra focus on the joys of creative writing.

Beginning with a workshop by Nick Handel, a local children’s author and television producer,  the children in Key Stage 2 were helped to plan their stories by imagining each stage as  a ‘film still’.  The pupils enjoyed a wonderful morning putting together their storyboards, before reading them out to their peers. By encouraging the children to see their stories through the lens of a camera, it enabled them to visualise the action in their story and understand what detail needed to be added in order to bring the story to life.

The next step was for years 5 and 6 to take what they had learned to Key Stage 1,  where they supported the children to plan ideas for a story based around the visual of a castle. Both the older and the younger children not only enjoyed the experience but benefited from it too and the teachers could not believe the difference in ideas that come from one same image! A selection of pieces was selected from years 1- 6, and put on display which welcomed the visitors for Open Morning.

Well done to all the budding writers for their hard work, great ideas and for showing such a keenness to improve their skills.  Who knows, there may be a future Roald Dahl or JK Rowling among us at Weston Green…….?
