WGS U11 Girls Hockey Tournament 2017

Posted on: 16 Mar 2017 by Weston Green School | Category: Key Stage 2, Year 5, Year 6

On Tuesday 7th March the sports department hosted the inaugural WGS U11 Girls Hockey Tournament at Old Cranleighan’s Hockey Club. This was a six team tournament with teams travelling from all around the south east. Four of the schools were from the Bellevue Group( inc WGS): The Gateway, Little Missenden (Bucks);Skippers Hill, East Sussex; and Sherbourne House, Hampshire. Plus they were joined by our local friends St Teresa’s Effingham   Ewell Castle, Ewell.

The morning consisted of the group stage where all the teams played against one another, collecting points to decide their final group position. The competitive nature of the matches meant no team could be sure of their final place until all the matches were finished.

WGS Girls started well with two convincing wins. They beat the eventual winners 3-0 in the group stage with a hugely impressive performance. As the group staged progressed, victories became hard to come by despite some excellent. Lily, Holly and Anaya all scored excellent goals and Evie made a great save which thrilled the local home support! The fact that all the Year 6 Girls represented the school was testament to how far they have progressed with their sport.  WGS was the smallest school (in terms of numbers of girls to pick from) and arguably played some of the best Hockey. One more win would have secured a place in the final! Well done to all the Year 6 girls plus Connie and Charlotte from Year 5.

The afternoon saw the knockout stage with a one off match to decide final placings. WGS lost a fantastic game of Hockey against St Teresa’s, who scored a very late winner, meaning a 4th place finish. The final was played between Skippers Hill and Gateway with the former winning an excellent encounter 1-0.

All in all it was a fantastic day with perfect weather and 6 schools competing in exactly the right spirit. A great advert for Girls Sport.

Special thanks to the 4 umpires, Bellevue Education for sponsoring the trophy and JJ at Old Cranleighans for helping to deliver the first of many such tournaments.
