Year 3 make links between English and History

Posted on: 06 Oct 2014 by Weston Green School | Category: Key Stage 2, Year 3

Year 3 pupils made cross-curricular links last week  between English and History when they wrote acrostic poems based on their research on the Ancient Egyptians.  They learned that an acrostic Poem uses the letters in a word to begin each line. All lines of the poem should relate to or describe the topic or subject.

Before they started planning their acrostics, they undertook some research on Ancient Egyptians, focusing on topics such as: Food, Farming, Pyramids, Pharaohs, Gods, Temples and the River Nile.

Using textbooks and other resources, pupils sourced some amazing facts about life in Ancient Egypt from 3,000 BC through to 30 BC. They researched how the Egyptians lived and farmed along the River Nile, using the rich soil to produce food for themselves and their animals. They planted fruit trees and vines to give them fruit and shade from the heat.

They learned how pyramids were built and how Egypt was ruled by the pharaohs.  One of the favourite facts the pupils enjoyed discovering was the Egyptian practice of mummification of bodies after they died and how important the afterlife was to them. They were also fascinated to learn that the Ancient Egyptians invented lots of things we still use today such as paper, pens and toothpaste!

The pupils went on to write some really interesting Acrostic Poems which included many facts from their personal research.
