Year 4 visit Painshill Park

Posted on: 23 Sep 2014 by Weston Green School | Category: Key Stage 2, Year 4

On Thursday 18th September, Year 4 pupils visited Painshill Park in Cobham to take part in a workshop on Habitats. The visit provided the pupils with the opportunity to explore, discover and extend their learning in this topic which they are studying in science this term.

They spent the morning outdoors in glorious sunshine participating in various ‘hands on’ activities, including searching for land invertebrates in the woodland and meadows of this safe and inspiring environment. As they explored, the pupils delighted in having the freedom to discover a vast array of creatures hidden under logs and stones or among leaves and branches of  trees, as well as in the long grasses in the meadows. They recorded their findings and learned to identify and analyse each creature by counting the number of legs, eyes, wings and body parts. They studied the colour of each and examined the texture of the body, deciding whether or not each was suited to its environment, giving reasons why. They also learned about ecosystems, food chains and life cycles.

The morning ended with a series of fun games which included the wearing of blindfolds to discover how some creatures use their senses  to help them move around safely, and the donning of animal masks, as they acted out being the predator or the prey!

This was a thoroughly inspiring visit where Year 4 gained a better understanding of the outdoor environment and the many organisms that inhabit our world.
