Year 5 Are Excited to Begin learning Latin

Posted on: 15 Sep 2014 by Weston Green School

This week 5H were excited to be starting a brand new subject.  They had heard the word “Minimus” whispered amongst last year’s Years 5 and 6, but on Wednesday they were formally introduced to Minimus the mouse, and the rest of the family who lived at Vindolanda (a fort just south of Hadrian’s wall) around 100AD.

Using the delightful books written by Barbara Bell (who came to visit the school last year), Year 5H read their first story in Latin, and with the help of the pictures and a vocabulary list they surprised themselves by working out what was going on! They then took it in turns to wear appropriate masks for Minimus the mouse, and Vibrissa the cat as they stood in front of the class and introduced themselves – in Latin.

Their assembly at the end of this month will be all about the Minimus Latin course and they really look forward to showing you how quickly they are getting to grips with this amazing language.
