Year 5 take a stroll along the river

Posted on: 17 Mar 2016 by Weston Green School | Category: Key Stage 2, Year 5

Year 5 pupils took their learning outdoors last week when made a short trip to the banks of the Rivers Mole and Ember. They have been investigating rivers in their Geography lessons this term and this was an opportunity for them to see first-hand some of the geographical features they had been studying in the classroom.

The Mole and Ember rivers run side by side in Molesey and join together just west of Hampton Court Way before running into the Thames.  Year 5 were interested to learn that the River Mole once flowed into the Thames separately further upstream near Hampton Court; however, during the early 1930s when the Hampton Court Way and the bridge were built, it was redirected to flow into the Ember. Both rivers now enter the Thames in a single widened and straightened channel once occupied only by the River Ember.

With the sun shining, we walked along the banks of the rivers where we could observe the velocity of the water and identify key features such as meanders, some evidence of erosion, a tributary, and in the distance, a fast flowing weir. The pupils were able to observe the effects on the local environment and landscape where the rivers had eroded, transported and deposited materials along their journey.

No trip to a river would be complete without a game of Pooh Sticks. As they watched their sticks flow under the bridge, the pupils could see that the river was flowing at different speeds, with the velocity slower on the inside where deposition had occurred.
