Year 5 Travel Back In Time To Victorian Britain

Posted on: 15 Jun 2015 by Weston Green School | Category: Key Stage 2, Year 5

On Tuesday last week the children in 5H spent the day in a Victorian classroom with a blackboard and chalk and no technology in sight. To add to the atmosphere, they came to school appropriately dressed as Victorian children and each child was given a Victorian name. They were taught their 3 ‘Rs’ by a very strict Mrs Smit!

They chanted the times tables, got their heads around pounds, shillings and pennies, wrote on slates and did their best to avoid being be told to go and stand in the corner with the ‘Dunce Hat’. During playtime they were shown how to play Ringer with marbles and it was hugely popular amongst boys and girls! The ‘Drill’ deemed to be not as popular and they found it quite exhausting. They practised their copperplate handwriting, first on slates and then in their copy books using dip pens and ink, and quickly discovered how difficult it was to write without spilling or smudging the ink.

They were horrified when they lined up for lunch and they each received a bowl of gruel. In the afternoon they enjoyed a visit from Chertsey museum Education Service who brought a whole range of interesting artefacts and costumes. The pupils found out what it would have been like to have to go to work, perhaps as a chimney sweep or housemaid, and what life would have been like if they were lucky enough to go to school where they might encounter the back straightener and finger stocks if they fidgeting or slouched.
