Year 6 is left holding the baby!

Posted on: 29 Jun 2015 by Weston Green School | Category: Key Stage 2, Year 6

The beginning of last week saw a large and sudden  increase in  Year 6's class size!  However, all was not as it seemed as the sudden growth was all down to an intake of flour babies, as party of their PSHE topic 'Changes'.

Based upon Anne Fine's book 'Flour Babies', the class had to make their own flour baby using a bag of flour. As with the book, the aim was to teach the children about the responsibilities parents have and the sacrifices they have to make.

Although the creative  side of this was a lot of fun (decorating faces and planning their baby's wardrobe) the main objective of the activity was for the children to learn about responsibility.

Each day, Year 6 had to to take care of their babies and they began to understand what it would be like to plan a day where you have to factor in someone else's needs.  They found that at the beginning of the week, carrying the babies to lessons and breaks, was a lot of fun and quite a novelty.

They found this more problematic towards the end of the week and when going offsite. Luckily they managed to secure places at the Weston Green Crèche where Mrs Wirhers and Mrs Ranger offered very competitive rates.

The children enjoyed the experience very much and began to realise some of the sacrifices parents make for their children. Overall they found it quite a challenge as they could not get up and go whenever they wanted.

Well done Year 6 for being so mature and responsible; you were great flour baby parents.
