Year 6 trip to Henley Fort

Posted on: 09 Feb 2017 by Weston Green School

“Freedom is in peril: defend it with all your might”

Year 6 brought a very busy and intense half-term to an end with a dynamic and thought-provoking trip to Henley Fort in Surrey. The aim was to learn more about how England prepared its defences during World War II, and to think about how worrying the threat of invasion must have been for the civilians.

During the day they relived the roles of Home Guards and Air Raid Wardens, taking part in exercises such as camouflage, drill, I.D checks and road blocks. They also learned and experienced what would happen in an air raid and were intrigued by what items they would have to take with them into the shelter.  A real highlight was learning how to extinguish an authentic fire but there was no need to panic as it was not the real thing and the children were very sensible.

The children thoroughly enjoyed the trip for both its practical opportunities and its value as a springboard to their current history topic on post war life in Britain.
