A wonderful start to the school year

Posted on: 19 Sep 2019 by Weston Green School

Welcome to our first newsletter of the new school year, although in many ways it feels like we have been back for longer than we have! The school is already buzzing with enthusiastic learners excited to know what the day holds and enjoying their busy school lives.

Particularly impressive has been the way children across the school have settled quickly and confidently into their new routines. Many staff have commented on how calmly the school year has begun with children engaged, focused and productive and our new youngest children starting with us in Kindergarten and Reception already feel a full part of our school community.

Our themes in assemblies have been around how we can make the best start to school, our day and our learning. We have discussed how making sure that first impression is a positive one, yet also recognising that starting something new can also raise a mix of feelings, hopes and fears. By facing these we can step through those many doors of opportunity that school presents with confidence and create a strong first impression.

In just two weeks I’ve seen this demonstrated in the smiling confidence of children new to our school, the excited enthusiasm of Reception children working together to build structures that cross the entire school grounds, the growing sense of independence as our Year 3 and 4 pupils embark on their residentials, the keenness in competition of our sports teams and then the nervous aspiration of Year 6 pupils as they take on their new leadership roles and assume the position as ambassadors for our school community.

That sense of success in achieving these develops a deep self-esteem so crucial to further achievement in their learning, and one which we must continue to nurture through the broad and creative opportunities we strive to offer for all our children. More than that though, our children are demonstrating every day their understanding of what we believe to be our core values to aspire to. To be Curious, Respectful, Adaptable, Aspirational, Honest and Gracious. We will continue to teach children about what these values represent, what they look like and how they can demonstrate these in their work and play and we look forward to sharing with you more of how our wonderful school lives and breathes these values as we go through this year.

We look forward to presenting more about our school values and other new initiatives on Tuesday 24th September, at either 9.00am or 7.00pm, at our Vision, Values and Priorities Event for parents, where I will outline the way ahead for the school over the coming year and there will also be a chance to hear more specifically from key staff around how these will be developed over the coming months.

We look forward to seeing you there and wish you a wonderful start to the Autumn Term.

Mrs. Evans
