Celebrating a Spring Term full of achievements

Posted on: 29 Mar 2019 by Weston Green School

We have really enjoyed the glimpses of sun this week and the increasing warmth as spring begins at last to take hold. This Spring Term has been full of wonderful learning, exciting opportunities as well as chances for us to celebrate the achievements of our children.

As you know, one of our priorities this year is to develop our practice in creative writing. It is wonderful to see the result of this focus throughout the school and in the displays shown at our recent Open Morning. A fascinating and stimulating writing workshop for Key Stage 2 inspired story writing, whilst visits from the Young Shakespeare drama company engaged the children in modern day Hamlet, supported by a visit to the Globe Theatre.

The children in Year 6 have really taken to Shakespeare and are even creating their own puppet shows, simplifying the Bard’s stories to be able to tell them to children in Key Stage 1. The quality and progress of children’s writing has greatly improved from children in Reception constructing long sentences, correctly punctuated in cursive style, to Haiku poetry and lengthy creative stories, letters and reports inspired by rich texts such as The Railway Children and Goodnight Mr Tom in Key Stage 2. The results of this focus are clear to see across the school through our displays - please do take a look next time you visit.

It has been a term full of opportunities for enrichment with workshops and trips out such as to the dinosaur galleries at the Natural History Museum, deepening understanding of crime and punishment throughout history at the Tower of London, feeding the animals at Bocketts Farm or being creative in role play at Little Street. The children gain so much from these trips, through their engagement in learning, taking the abstract into the real and stimulating further discovery through lessons on their return to school.

We must conclude this term with a note of congratulation to our fantastic Year 6 cohort who demonstrated such resilience and focus during their entrance exam period and who, as a group, have achieved our best ever set of results. Every child has achieved entry to their school of choice, with many receiving offers from all their applications. In addition they have achieved 12 scholarships between them; 6 academic, 4 sports, 1 drama and 1 all round. We are extremely proud of them in all they have achieved and in how they consistently are fine ambassadors for our school in all we ask of them. Well done, Year 6!

We know we can end this term content that our pupils have progressed, have made the most of every day and have above all, enjoyed their time at school.

We wish each and every one of you a wonderful Easter break and we will see you in the Summer Term!

Mrs. Evans
