“Character is not made in a crisis it is only exhibited,”

Posted on: 19 Jan 2015 by Weston Green School

… so said Robert Freeman. When the tree did fall last Tuesday, the way that staff responded was exemplary. The mix of prompt action and calm thinking was astounding: concern for safety led decision-making, and collegiality both in deed and thought was impressive enabling us to manage the situation successfully. It also led to careful consideration of that all had to be done to ensure continued safety and a school routine that could function well.

The incident revealed that character which we sometimes take for granted – not forged through crisis but manifested in it.

The work that the tree fellers did last week was most professional and fascinating for the children to watch. They will complete their work this coming Thursday and so school can resume in the Early Years building from Friday morning.

We are deeply thankful that everyone has been kept safe throughout this and I would like to reiterate my thanks for the understanding of all concerned: parents, staff and children and end with another quote, this time from Henry Kissinger: ‘there cannot be a crisis next week. My schedule is already full!’
