Determination and Resilience in the New Year

Posted on: 24 Jan 2019 by Weston Green School

In school, like many of us throughout our wider school community, we have started the new year afresh with a desire to identify and fulfil those promises and ambitions we set for ourselves for the coming year. Across the school, classes have been discussing having a focus, making a resolution, to achieve over the months ahead. What is it you would like to improve? What would you like to start? What would you like to stop? How would you like things to be different for you by the end of this year?

There have been some thoughtful contributions in our assemblies on this subject: from helping parents with chores, reducing time spent on devices, to contributing a percentage of pocket money to a chosen charity each month. We have also recognised, as January has progressed, that in order to achieve our goal we have to break it down into achievable steps and be determined and resilient to keep going. Around 80% of resolutions fail during January alone!

Setting goals for ourselves is important, but developing that level of determination and resilience against knockbacks is equally so. Determination and perseverance are core elements of our Learner Profiles, the skills of which we emphasise every day throughout our learning from Kindergarten to Year 6. This half term’s focus is the woodpecker who demonstrates that he ‘sticks at things’, he is resilient, perseveres and does not give up. These are vital skills to emphasise throughout our learning in school and beyond: to keep going even if you find learning tricky; be resolute in finding the answer and determined to improve and succeed. Like all our Learner Profiles, these skills are life long; they build character and set excellent examples for later life.

We appreciate that as parents your role in developing determination and resilience is vital and complements all that we do in school. Through the activities you encourage, the adventures and new experiences you provide and the chances to take a risk and have a go within the security of family life, you create opportunities for these important skills to thrive and become a part of your child's growing attitudes and personality.

We wish you success in whatever your resolutions may be!
