First Impressions

Posted on: 19 Sep 2018 by Weston Green School

Welcome to our first newsletter of the new school year and to my first blog as Headteacher of Weston Green School.

Whilst the term is really beginning to fly I am reminded each day how important those first steps in a new role are, just like those first steps back into the classroom or as your child steps through the school door for the first time. In getting to know the children I have been so impressed with their confidence, enthusiasm and enjoyment in their learning and how they have settled quickly into a calm and purposeful environment.

Our themes in assemblies have been around ensuring that first impression is a positive one, yet recognising that starting something new can also raise a mix of feelings, hopes and fears. By facing these we can step through those many doors of opportunity that school presents with confidence and create a strong first impression. In just a few weeks I’ve seen this demonstrated in the tenacity of the abseilers at our recent residential trips, to the keenness in competition of our sports teams, from the excited enthusiasm of our youngest experiencing Forest School for the first time, to the nervous aspiration of Year 6 pupils as they apply for and receive their leadership roles for this year. That sense of success in achieving these develops a deep self-esteem so crucial to further achievement in their learning, and one which we must continue to nurture through the broad and creative opportunities we strive to offer for all our children. They have certainly shown me that you never get a second chance to make that first impression. The whole community at Weston Green has made the strongest of these in my first few weeks and I am so looking forward to what happens next!

Wishing you a wonderful start to the Autumn Term.

Mrs. Evans
