It had been wonderful to welcome parents to our various Harvest Celebrations last week and even more so to see the joy on children's faces as they sang, recited poems and readings with gusto! After almost two years since live performance ceased in school, we realised how much we had missed this. It was a proud moment to watch the children’s confidence and enjoyment, they certainly hadn’t forgotten how to do this!

Many of the year groups, in the preparation for harvest, have been learning about how we can do more with the plenty we have, to share and support those around us who are less fortunate. This has included learning particularly about those on our doorstep whom the East Elmbridge food bank supports. Thank you for your generous contributions for this cause, both monetary, and in food donations. We have raised a total of £496 to be shared with All Saints Church, The East Elmbridge Food Bank and Princess Alice Hospice.

Our learning for Harvest has tied in well with our overall school priorities this year, with “Weston Goes Green” at the forefront of these. This term the focus is on food, food miles, food waste and how we can do more to reduce these and care for our world. The Eco Council are recording and  monitoring the food waste from children’s plates each day and children can earn rewards for reducing their waste at lunchtimes. We have also introduced more recycling into our playground and built growing beds for each house to begin to grow vegetables and herbs for use in our kitchen. Our aim is for children to make a commitment at the end of each term to a change they can make, and sustain, which will impact positively on our world. We look forward to sharing these with you after half term.

We wish all our families a restful and enjoyable half term.

Sarah Evans
