How a nurturing learning environment enables children to excel

Much educational research has rightly looked at what makes for great learning. Whilst numerous factors play a part, a meta-study of the research will clearly show that it is undoubtedly the case that the teacher-pupil relationship is a key influence in driving rapid and deep learning. We are always looking to foster strong relationships with the children as it makes for a classroom atmosphere which encourages risk-taking and creativity, which promotes clever thinking and which looks to maximise opportunity for learning and is constantly seeking to challenge pupils.

As part of this, we want the children to understand what a great piece of work looks like and to reflect on how to improve still further - this is our WILF (‘what I’m looking for’), the success criteria which help children track their route to high level learning.

This year, we have introduced ‘purple pen power’ so that the children can go back over work to edit, change, adjust and improve and, in so doing, deepen their learning. We are building a culture where mistakes are seen not as a negative but as another learning opportunity, where thinking more creatively (and demonstrating our 'Spider' Learner Profile) improves the learning.

The fruit of this is increasingly in evidence as the children are better able to explain their learning and show a level of deeper understanding, enabling them to excel.
