Maths Mastery Evening and Key Stage 2 Experience Day

Posted on: 14 Feb 2020 by Weston Green School

We have finished the half term this week with two fantastic events that really underline the breadth and quality of the curriculum and offer that we provide here at Weston Green. Our very popular Maths Mastery Evening was both fun and interactive, with parents learning much about the new approach we are taking in the teaching of maths and the impact this is already having on children’s understanding. The slides and a fun maths quiz were all shared as a part of our mailing this week.

However, we started the week with a new initiative we have introduced; our Key Stage 2 Experience Day. The day was planned to provide an early insight into how school life evolves as children transition from Year 2 into Year 3.  It may seem early, but the children are already beginning to think about this, and by showing them and providing opportunities to try things out, we hoped to emphasise the many benefits and exciting times ahead. This was more than proven as the children gathered in the playground at the start of the day stating to anyone who would listen that they were in Year 3 today! The shared excitement was palpable. There then followed a varied day, enabling them to experience the use of our specialist teachers though art and science lessons in the ‘Lab’, to spending time in the Year 3 classrooms, taking a Spanish lesson with DJ Musica, getting to know the Year 3 staff team, working together with current Year 3 children and learning from them what the transition has been like, as well as a chance to question older Key Stage 2 children in a supportive sharing session. The highlight for many had to be the trip in the minibus down to Old Cranleighans Sports Club for the Key Stage 2 sports lesson! Throughout their day the children were buzzing and positively ‘grew’ before our eyes, rising to the challenges and opportunities that Key Stage 2 will bring.

It was a day to remember and we know the experiences will stay with them as we move towards the summer and the more formal ‘transitional’ opportunities that will happen. In this way, our aim is for each and every child to take that big step with confidence, knowing that there is so much ahead and that the time is right for them to move on.

We wish you a wonderful and restful half term break.

Mrs. Evans
