We are planning to develop both ‘outdoor’ learning and the use of technology in the coming months. Somehow, this seems to be moving in two directions at once: a return to children being muddy, looking at bugs, pond-dipping and the like seems at odds with developing learning through the media of ipads, virtual learning platforms and submitting homework by cyber-space.
Whilst it seems that the one flies in the face of the other, in reality, there is a coming together of things, rather than a confusion or divergence. It is a thrillingly expanding journey. This is about ‘knowing your world’ and bringing the senses into play, of holistic learning as well as delving into how the latest technology can be used to enhance understanding; it is about being able to see the natural world as well as the virtual world in action; it is complete education, giving full scope for children to understand their world, delight in all it has for them and to continually feed that hunger for more learning. Marcel Proust said, “The voyage of discovery is not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.” The landscape is there .. we are simply giving the children every opportunity to discover it.
