Preparing for Future Schooling

Posted on: 15 Nov 2018 by Weston Green School

It is November already and the term is moving quickly as we are engrossed in the busyness of school life. Children are settled and working hard, as well as frequently demonstrating their enjoyment of their learning every day. As this term has progressed I have been extremely impressed by the dedication and commitment our Year 6 children have shown towards their studies. Without exception, they have shown a mature sense of responsibility towards achieving well and to ensuring they demonstrate the best of themselves in their upcoming entrance exams. All of our Upper School teachers are supporting this year group, providing a thorough academic preparation but also supporting the children pastorally to ensure they are confident and retain a high self-esteem.

In preparing our pupils for their future schooling at 11+, it is important we know and understand the next stage options for our children so that we are best placed to support the application process. I have spent some time this term visiting several of our local independent senior schools, such as Surbiton High School, Claremont and Notre Dame so that I too can get a real sense of what each can offer our pupils here at Weston Green. We pride ourselves at Weston Green in developing strong relationships with each individual, understanding their strengths, interests, talents and personalities, and in knowing these schools well, we are best placed to guide parents' thoughts and choices. I will be continuing to visit more schools as the term progresses.

We have recently updated our Future Schools programme which helps to guide parents through the process as well as demonstrating how we work to prepare our pupils in school. The next stage of this is our Future Schools Information Evening for Year 5 on 5th December where several schools will be visiting to talk about the type and style of their schools and their different offers at 11+.  Although aimed at Year 5, we would also welcome any parents from Years 3 or 4 who may wish to attend for their own information and to assist decision making. Please find further information in the Weston Green Weekly. There are Future Schools information events planned for the Spring Term too, as well as discussions with Key Stage 2 staff to support further, as we progress through the year. We do hope you will find these useful.
