Reflecting on the year

Posted on: 10 Jul 2019 by Weston Green School

In the whirlwind of busy-ness that is the end of term, all of a sudden we find we are here, in our final week.

We have competed in Sports Days, celebrated at Prize Giving and this week, ended the year with the most fabulous performances of Aladdin - a real highlight of our year at Weston Green.

It is natural at this time of year to reflect on our achievements across the year and what a year it has been. I am very proud of all we have achieved during my first year here at Weston Green and it is also exciting to see the green shoots of development already showing through in our plans for the next exciting year ahead.

At the beginning of the year, I outlined to parents and the staff our priorities for this year. At those meetings I made it clear that it is important that as a school we never sit still; it is important to keep evolving, moving forward and addressing the changes we need to make, to ensure that what we offer remains relevant, engaging and forward thinking.

This year our priorities have been clear: a focus on the development of English;  integrating the technology and application of Chromebooks throughout the curriculum; and a focus on creating more dialogue around teaching and learning for children.

The improvement of the quality of children's writing has been clear to see, from the extended opportunities to write now included within the curriculum, to the renewed emphasis on quality handwriting, the introduction of rich texts which inspire young writers, to workshops for children and parents on developing skills for writing. I am pleased to tell you that as a result of this focus our internal assessments show that there has been a sustained increase in the attainment and progress of children’s writing across the school.

The use of Chromebook technology has transformed teaching and learning at Weston Green. Children have been engaging in more collaborative working and projects they can share with each other, as well as casting their learning up onto the class screen to share with others. It has also transformed the way we work as teachers, ensuring we can apply more of the skills of computing throughout the curriculum and also the way we plan and communicate with each other. I am pleased to tell you that we are able to extend this still further next year, with enhanced internet provision and additional investment in more Chromebooks for the benefit of all year groups.

Our monitoring of the quality of teaching and learning has shown a palpable difference in the way children are talking about their learning. By identifying the  ‘steps to success’ in lessons, children are able to discuss the steps they need to take to become successful in any one lesson, about where they have achieved well and what needs to be their development focus. To involve children in this learning dialogue is crucial in enabling them to become analytical yet confident in the learning process. There are always areas we can improve upon and this helps children to see learning as a process rather than an outcome.

In addition to these areas, we are thrilled that we will be re-launching our After School Care club from September 2019 to now run from 3.15pm - 6.00pm Monday to Friday. As a response to parent feedback, these revised timings, as well as an improved provision and offer, will add greatly to our commitment to offer wraparound care for parents where this is needed.

We have been developing our priorities for the next academic year and look forward to sharing these with you at our “Vision, Values and School Priorities” Events on Tuesday 24th Sept 2019.

Before then, we thank you all for your support over the year and wish all our families a restful summer break. We look forward to seeing you refreshed in September!
