The Power of the Team

Posted on: 01 Oct 2018 by Weston Green School

As the month has changed from September to October it has instantly felt more autumnal, with a chill wind but still bright days full of sunshine. The term is fully in swing with children settled into their new routines and expectations.

Our Learner Profiles form the backdrop to our school life here at Weston Green. Each one reminds us of the skills, attributes and attitudes essential to achieving well and to gaining the most from the rich experiences that fill every day. This half term the focus is on ‘The Bee’. This Learner Profile teaches us the value of teamwork, how working together can allow us to achieve much more through listening to each other, sharing our creativity, supporting one another, expressing ourselves, and taking turns. The children have been considering all the different types of teams they are involved in and how these skills will support them; expressing in our assemblies how sometimes we need to share the load and take on roles within the team, even if they are roles we don’t at first wish to do!

This depth of collaboration is evident throughout the school, through homework projects built together, to competitions organised by our Year 6 Librarians, to the teams of children in Reception building Mr Gumpy’s motor car and the keen competitions being fought each week in both Netball and Football by our teams in Key Stage 2 - each team demonstrating so clearly that  “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much". It is a joy to witness that sense of pride which accompanies such team success and which builds strong self-esteem and confidence to transcend through the children's learning in other areas. The work of 'The Bee’ provides valuable lessons for us all and complements our other Learner Profiles which we emphasise through the year. We look forward to sharing our work on these with you.
