Welcome back

Posted on: 16 Jan 2020 by Weston Green School

Welcome to the first newsletter of the new year and the new decade! The children have come back to school full of enthusiasm and determination to learn and play well, making the most out of school life.

I’m sure many of you will have made new year’s resolutions in the past few weeks. Our focus in assemblies has been on what these may be, setting ourselves goals to achieve over the weeks and months ahead. What is it that you would like to improve? What would you like to start? What would you like to stop? How would you like things to be different for you by the end of this year? There have been some thoughtful contributions from many children; from helping parents with chores, reducing time spent on devices, talking rather than messaging, contributing a percentage of pocket money to a chosen charity each month or reducing single-use plastic.

We have also recognised that keeping to our goals can be difficult...80% of resolutions fail during January alone! We have talked with the children about how putting something into your life can be a more positive way of seeing the difference and making it work and have linked this to our school value of being ‘Aspirational’ and how setting ourselves targets and ambitions to achieve is important. The determination and perseverance to succeed are also core elements of Weston Green's Learner Profiles. The woodpecker demonstrates that he ‘sticks at things’, he is resilient, perseveres and does not give up. These are vital skills to emphasise throughout our learning in school and beyond: to keep going even if you find learning tricky; be resolute in finding the answer and determined to improve and succeed. Like all our Learner Profiles and school values, these skills are life long; they build character and set excellent examples for later life.

As parents, through the activities you encourage, the adventures and new experiences you provide and the chances to take a risk and have a go within the security of family life, you create opportunities for these important skills to become a part of your child's growing attitudes and personality.

We wish you a very happy new year and success in whatever your resolutions may be!
