We have all been going “Quackers” at Weston Green this last week. On Monday 14th May we took delivery of six duck eggs in an incubator.
The children were initially intrigued, but not much seemed to be happening. Then on Wednesday 16th May, Year 5 were delighted to announce that “the eggs were definitely starting to crack”. A Year 6 pupil even witnessed a little beak starting to peck through. By lunchtime on Wednesday there was quite a crowd, as our first little hatchling emerged.
Over the next 48 hours, all six eggs hatched, and so Weston Green had six new additions to the Science Lab.
Everyone was then asked to think of appropriate names, with Year 6 being given the honour of selecting the final names from the shortlist. There were many strong contenders but Year 6 decided on Big Quack, Lucky, Waffles, Pickles, Quackers and Fluff Puff.
The presence of the ducks has enabled pupils to learn about different life cycles, how to care for young animals, adaptations of animals and natural selection. There has been much excitement in teaching them to swim and caring for the ducklings.
The ducklings will soon be returning to a farm in Kent and although we will be sorry to see them go, they will be much happier on a farm with a pond, than at school and we are glad we were able to give them an excellent start in life.
