The Weston Green Eco Group was formed in September 2019, with great interest from pupils across all year groups, keen to make a difference to their environment, both locally and globally. In just one term the group have organised recycling bins in every classroom and participated in the national “Just one tree” day, which raised over £140 to help with reforestation projects in Africa and Asia.
Eco Group carried out their first litter pick in December, undeterred by the cold, dreary weather. Armed with litter grabbers and bin bags, they set off for Weston Green Common. The children worked in teams scouring the bushes and undergrowth and in just half an hour they managed to fill three large bin bags. They all agreed this was a worthwhile way to spend a lunchtime.
Eco Group's aims for this term and onwards are to look at energy use across the school and highlight areas where this can be reduced. The group will also be looking at the use of plastic - particularly single-use plastic - across the school and how this can be reduced, as well as carrying out further litter picks and finding other ways to support local environmental charities.
