On Thursday 12 June, “Flower Power” invaded Weston Green School in the afternoon! The Years 6 and 5 pupils transformed into hippies wearing head bands, t-shirts with peace logos, beads, maxi dresses, and there were even a few wire-rimmed coloured glasses and moustaches.
The Year 6 pupils are learning about aspects of recent history from studying the life of John Lennon as an example of someone who made a significant impact on popular culture and entertainment. In Year 5, the pupils are learning about The Beatles and the major influence they had on music. The purpose of the workshop therefore was to give the pupils an insight into John Lennon’s life before, during and after The Beatles.
Phil’s talk was most informative and they learned a lot within a short space of time. He brought along some items of clothing, even the green Sergeant Pepper’s coat, as well as a variety of guitars.
The real fun started when Phil performed some of John Lennon’s well known songs. The pupils, at first a bit shy, soon lost their inhibitions and it was not long before they were all singing, dancing, twisting and shaking to tunes such as Love is All I Have, Lucy in The Sky with Diamonds, Help and Strawberry Fields Forever. The few teachers who were lucky enough to attend the workshop, or parts of it, enjoyed it just as much, if not more!
