KS1 Are Entertained by ‘Borka: The Goose With No Feathers’

KS1 pupils were fortunate enough to be invited to attend a performance by the English Touring Opera at the Vera Fletcher Hall. They watched a specially commissioned opera for children, ‘Borka: The Goose With No Feathers’, based on the book by John Burningham.

We received a copy of the book before the performance, which we had read with the children, and had also learnt short sections of two of the songs from a CD, which meant the children were able to join in when they heard these during the performance.

The opera lasted just under an hour and involved interaction with the audience and very clever puppetry for some of the geese: at one point a large goose flew over our heads suspended from a fishing line!

The standard of the singing was very high, and the production was informal, with the singers and musicians all introducing themselves at the beginning and taking questions from the children at the end.

It was a wonderful cultural experience for the children, a beautifully staged performance and a very exciting way to spend a chilly Friday afternoon!
