Sport in Key Stage 1: where it all begins

It only feels like yesterday that the Autumn term was starting, and sport at Weston Green was getting underway. We have had a very successful term, particularly in the senior teams, and this success is bred from the drills we do in Key Stage 1 which help to develop pupils' skills and understanding at this young age.

In both Year 1 and 2 at Weston Green, we begin with the basics, giving pupils the opportunity to take part in three different drills which change every week, but, which help develop their transferable skills. The children will then rotate around these drills so they all have a chance to experience them. These three drills focus on different aspects of Football, Netball, following instructions and movement.

As the term develops, we then introduce some match play, which we use as an opportunity to focus on positional knowledge, where all children will have the chance to play in defence, midfield and attack, ensuring that they understand the importance of being in a particular position, whilst ensuring they are in a space and not crowding around the ball.

These drills are developed further in Year 2, once again reminding pupils of the basics of following instructions, and making sure that they remain in space so they can pass and receive the ball in both Football and Netball. We also encourage the children to communicate as much as possible during these sessions, as this will benefit them in the long term when they begin playing in fixtures. This sets a sound foundation for pupils as they progress into Key Stage 2 and the introduction of proper teams and regular fixtures against other schools.

We look forward to another fantastic term of sport ahead.
