Reception Pumpkin Picking at Garsons Farm

Reception have been learning about the seasons and building towards our Harvest celebrations, so what better way to bring this to life than some autumnal pumpkin picking in the sunshine! This is the first trip for many of the children and helps build confidence in unfamiliar settings. The ride in the minibus was one of the highlights of the morning! On our arrival at Garsons, we were met by a very friendly pumpkin ‘witch’ dressed in her special gear and wearing a witches hat.  She explained to the children the importance of respecting the pumpkin plants while walking in the field.  The children had to work together like bees to collect their pumpkins, plus show the resilience of a woodpecker to carry their chosen prize back to the minibus. This first hand experience of the source of the food they eat is finished off with the cooking of delicious pumpkin soup back in the classrooms and an exploration of the structure of a pumpkin. A priceless experience and a wonderful day!
