Reception share Forest School sessions with local nursing home residents

Pupils in Reception at Weston Green have been spending time at the Home of Compassion in Thames Ditton, sharing their Forest School sessions with residents, to further their outdoor learning experiences.

Pupils and residents enjoyed spotting and identifying different birds in the care home’s grounds along the banks of the River Thames, before making their own birdfeeders to hang in the mature trees. Other activities enjoyed during the shared sessions have included a nature trail and decorating wooden medallions.

Originally developed as an initiative in Scandinavia and growing in popularity in the UK, Forest School allows learners the time and space to develop skills, interests and understanding of the outdoors, through practical, hands on experiences.

Weston Green School’s Forest School programme provides pupils with the opportunity to expand their learning beyond the classroom and to explore their natural surroundings, helping them to develop an appreciation and respect for nature, whilst providing invaluable opportunities for developing problem solving skills, initiative, co-operation and physical development.

Pupils are looking forward to two further sessions at the Home of Compassion, during June, forming part of an ongoing programme of activities between the school and the care home, including pupils writing letters to residents and visits from the school’s choir to provide entertainment at Christmas time.

Weston Green’s Head of Early Years, Mr Jason Lang, said: “The children have had a wonderful time visiting the Home of Compassion with our Forest School Leader, Miss Carter, meeting residents and exploring the care home’s beautiful grounds. Forest School brings learning to life for our pupils and allows them to connect with the outdoors, and sharing this with others, really enables the children to develop their confidence and social skills, from a young age. We would like to thank the Home of Compassion for making us all feel so welcome and we look forward to visiting again soon.”
