Science Across the School

Science Across the School

Science lessons continued in lockdown, with children investigating air resistance by making parachutes, Hooke’s Law by stretching elastic bands and separating mixtures with home made sieves. However I think we were all very pleased to be back in the lab carrying out experiments together - not least parents who no longer have to be the able assistant and record keeper during the experiments.

Since being back year 5 have been working very hard on separating mixtures, they have used evaporation, filtration and condensation as separation techniques. They have also moved on to investigating chemical reactions, and this week were seeing if they could inflate a balloon using neutralisation.

Year 6 have been investigating artificial selection and adaptation. This has led to some in depth debates on whether selective breeding for our benefit is a good or bad thing. We’ve also debated whether we should use DNA technology to bring back extinct animals. Would we turn the wooded area into the next Jurassic Park?

I think all would agree that we have missed the ability to collaborate and discuss in science, and are so pleased to be back learning together.
