Victorian Day in Year 5

Victorian Day in Year 5

“Cleanliness comes next to Godliness” boomed Mrs Evans as Year 5 chimney sweeps, maids, street children and young sirs and ladies entered assembly this morning. “Stand with straight backs and hands by your sides. You will not talk. We will begin our assembly with a hymn.  I expect you to sing along with joy and respect” she continued.

The day didn’t get any easier as arithmetic practice on slate boards was next, with teachers more stern than Weston Green children had ever had the misfortune to experience before.  But then a fun-filled session with marbles and hopscotch, followed by traditional PE drills, gave the children a break from their formidable classroom experiences, before an afternoon of bridge-building following in the footsteps of Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

At the end of the day the children were dismissed and could be heard saying “the best thing was being told off!”, “I loved playing marbles” and “I’m so glad we’re not really Victorian!”.
