Parent: “How was sport today?
Child: “Yeah, good”
Parent: “What did you do in the session?”
Child: “Sport!”
Parent: “Yes, but what sport?”
Child: “You know…usual stuff. Please can I have a biscuit?”
As many parents will have discovered, getting information out of your child at the end of the day isn’t easy so we thought it would be useful to give you an idea of what really goes on in Year 1 & 2 Sport.
Since, September 2016 the Year 1 & 2 programme now mirrors the Key Stage 2 (Year 3-6) programme:
Each session starts with the group being split into three then moving around three warm up drills to get the children moving around and get the muscles ready for action! We then move the children around three skill drills. During Autumn Term, this will be 1) Football skills 2) Netball (ball handling) & 3) Mixture of handling and football drills with emphasis on listening to “sporty” instructions. The drills will concentrate on the basic skills needed to improve at each individual sport. With all this completed, we may end with a small sided game or competitive relay.
We have a few common themes that run throughout all the sessions:
a) Every child is treated as sporty and given equal opportunity
b) We try to take away the fear of failure - don’t worry about messing up
c) Just give your best
d) Smile and enjoy
Through a weekly session running throughout the school year, the children learn so much and develop a love of sport. This allows them to enter Key Stage 2 full of confidence and with a desire to play sport.
So, now you know!
